Creating a Patient-Generated Health Data Visualization System for Older Adults with Multiple Chronic Conditions
Abstract
dc:description.abstractMany patients collect health data at home, which supports their engagement in managing their health. The patient-generated health data (PGHD) can provide physicians with a clear view of a patient's condition between appointments, but limited appointment time makes summarized information necessary. One way to present a summary of PGHD is to visualize them. We conducted interviews and a 2-week diary study with nine older adult patients with MCC to understand how they track and physicalize their PGHD at home. This research identified the types of PGHD patients collected at home and the preferred visual encodings and channels. We created PGHD visualizations and gathered physician feedback, which informed the development of a PGHD visualization system that provides temporal navigation and summaries, with separate views for patients and their physicians. Useful PGHD visualizations should support both patients' day-to-day review and reflection and physicians' long-term review.
