Three-Dimensional Simulations of the Behaviour of Layered Soils under Simple Shear
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis thesis explores the behavior of uniform and layered soils under simple shear using 3D numerical analyses, focusing on the influence of a thin clay layer within sandy soils on strength and liquefaction resistance. Comparison of 2D and 3D simulations of direct simple shear (DSS) tests highlights qualitative differences and internal flow phenomena. Results indicate substantial impact of clay layers on sample strength and liquefaction resistance. While 2D simulations underestimate these effects, 3D analyses show closer alignment with laboratory data. However, the quantitative impact of 3D effects and internal flow remains unclear due to calibration limitations. Further research incorporating 3D-calibrated parameters is needed to accurately assess these effects. This study underscores the importance of considering three-dimensional and internal flow effects in numerical simulations of DSS tests for improved geotechnical modeling accuracy.
