Temporal Dynamics at the Neurobehavioral Interface: In Search of a Common Currency

dc:description.abstractThe human cortex evokes a vast repertoire of timescales in its neural activity, the Intrinsic Neural Timescales (INT) which are manifest in both time and frequency domain. However, the relationship of the brain’s INT to the varied timescales of behavior remains unclear. I investigate the dynamics of INT by measuring the median frequency (MF) via sliding window analyses in both electroencephalography (EEG) activity and subjects’ continuous behavioral assessment of their perceived engagement in different music pieces. The main findings demonstrate significant differences in dynamic MF of both neural and behavioral activity, significant correlations between them, and a unidirectional relationship of neural to behavioral dynamics as measured through Granger causality. Together, these results demonstrate that neural dynamics relate to behavioral MF dynamics through shared fluctuations in their INT as measured in the frequency domain. This highlights the key role of the brain’s neural dynamics in shaping our behavior and its dynamics.
