The Changing Landscape of Ottawa Rooming Houses between 1990 and 2020

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This thesis investigates the emblematic changes of the rooming house landscape in Ottawa between 1990 and 2020. Unveiling a range of socio-economic factors, this research adopts the framework of neoliberalism and financialization of housing to explore this changing landscape. My research focuses on the closure and subsequent transformations of rooming houses in two neighborhoods, Centretown and Sandy Hill. Through examining these cases and study sites in downtown Ottawa, this research uncovers how rooming houses undergo changes, often succumbing to profit-driven corporate interests, thus steering rooming houses away from their traditional role of providing affordable rental housing in the private sector. The changing landscape of rooming houses illustrates the ramifications for affordable housing options in the neoliberal and financialized urban environment of cities such as Ottawa.
