The current state of world affairs conveyed in recent news media often underscores the unpredictability of what lies ahead. How might the combined effects of these daily headlines influence the world of tomorrow? This thesis will speculate on how interweaving among these narratives might suggest spatial and social futures that translate into the language of architecture. This thesis investigation will comprise three layers: 01 Reading and analysis of current events journalism, with a focus on social injustice and inequity. 02 Critical reflection about the fictional architectural environments of others who work with narrative. 03 Development of a set of speculative architectural fictions that respond to items 01-02. I hope to encourage conversations about the potential for speculative architecture presented in tandem with narrative fiction in increasing awareness and inspiring discussion about the futures that current pressing world issues may foretell.
