Abstract
dc:description.abstractPeople appear to be inconsistent when deciding what to trust online. They are cautious in onlinedating platforms but are often naive and careless when acessing online services. We conductedtwo user studies to better understand this difference: one on evaluating online dating profiles andanother on evaluating online service portals. We found that users follow the same trust processeswhile using different online platforms. The inconsistent observed behavior is due to people havingthe option of conversing with a potential date online; with online services, sensitive informationmust be given without any identity-confirming dialog. To bridge this gap we propose an authenti-cation browser which allows the user to verbally interact online platforms in order to ask identity-confirming questions of the service before authenticating to the service. Here we present the resultsfrom our user studies and an initial design for an authentication browser extension.
