Geology and isotope geochemistry of the Beaver-Temiskaming Silver Mine, Cobalt, Ontario

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Silver veins at the Beaver-Temiskaming mine are economic in Archean mafic volcanic and intercalated base-metal sulphide-rich sedimentary rocks, but uneconomic in the Proterozoic Nipissing diabase sill. Textural and isotopic evidence indicate a paragenetic succession of silicates, arsenides-sulpharsenides, silver-sulphosalts-sulphides, and carbonates. Metal zoning in the As-bearing minerals is Ni-Co-Fe. Depositional temperatures were about 210-240°C (oxygen isotopes in silicates), 211-258°C (arsenopyrite composition) and 130-227°C (coexisting sulphides). Carbonate isotopic data were reset by meteoric water. Connate waters, interpreted from fluid inclusion data, equilibrated with Archean sulphide-rich interflow units and overlying Proterozoic detritus (Pb isotopic data) and then deposited these elements in veins after the diabase had cooled sufficiently to fracture.
