The roots of the complexity and diversity of this field are deep in its social nature (human factor) as well as the changeability of the growing new technology. We need a shared language for communicating insights and experiences to resolve common difficult problems encountered in this field. One way to create a shared language is to build a pattern language. A language of this sort is a collection of patterns which share similar assumptions, terminology, and context. The goal of my thesis is to write such a pattern language for human-computer interaction. To organize the space of an informative artifact and the structure of my proposed proto-pattern language, I borrowed the theory of representation and spatial organization of the pattern based architecture. The idea of creative user participation is also extracted from this kind of architecture. Christopher Alexander’s pattern theory helped me to find a proper representation for this idea to correspond with the contemporary way of thinking about the system. To write this language, I have used the vocabulary, terminology, and conventions of the software pattern community. My proto-pattern language advocates the application of participatory design instead of conventional joint application design approach.
