Visual hulls for volume estimation : a fast marching cubes based approach
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis thesis describes a technique that can be used to compute and represent the visual hull of a 3D object. Silhouette-based methods rely on multiple views of an object to construct cone-like volumes that intersect, forming the visual huH. Multiple views can be generated using one of many different camera systems. The visual hull is accurately calculated using high resolution voxel based models, which can be computationally expensive. The marching cubes algorithm improves upon the voxel based model by replacing surface voxels with polygonal patches, removing the sharp voxel comers characteristic of voxel based models. The positional accuracy of each surface patch is improved through the implementation of a binary search applied to all patch vertices.
