The mechanism by which the probiotic is able to increase growth rates and reduced susceptibility to pathogen infection was investigated. A number of bacterial strains were isolated from the digestive tract of Haliotis midae that are capable of degrading a wide variety of different polysaccharides (Erasmus, 1996).
