This was done by investigating methods to induce a mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition (MET) in mouse periocular mesenchyme cells to drive them to form fully differentiated adult corneal endothelial cells in culture. Periocular mesenchyme surrounding the optic cup was dissected from E12.5 and E13.5 mouse embryos and immortalised with the SV40 large T-antigen.
