To gain clarity on the meaning of depression, theoretical concepts were reviewed. Depressive syndrome was surveyed to delineate symptomatology, course, treatment and prognosis. Studies of childhood depression were collated to find common threads in descriptions and treatments of depressed children. A perspective for diagnosing depression in children was formulated.
