The following species, representing the major fynbos elements, were chosen for intensive investigation: Erica plukenetii and Erica hispidula (ericoid element), Thamnochortus lucens and Askidiosperma paniculatum (restioid element), Protea laurifolia and Leucadendron salignum (proteoid element).
