The nature of this association and mechanisms responsible for CAO has not been previously studied, but likely includes: airway narrowing (from bronchiolitis, bronchiectasis or persistent low-grade inflammation associated with healed PTB); and reduced lung elastic recoil from coexistent emphysema. The present study investigated the structure and function of the lung in subjects with tuberculosis-associated obstructive pulmonary disease (TOPD) identified in BOLD 2005, and aspects of its natural history and response to treatment.
