Large diameter synthetic grafts remain patent for extended periods due to high flow rate, while smaller diameter grafts occlude more readily. Mechanical property mismatch between graft and host artery has been cited as one of the major factors that contribute to graft occlusion. It has thus been important to develop a readily available graft that is accepted by the body and does not cause flow abnormalities and stress-concentrations at graft-artery junctions.
