The population of approximately 50 000 is served by a Hospice organisation which offers home-based care (it has no residential component), 4 Municipal clinics, the 96 bed Knysna Provincial District Hospital and a regional referral centre 65km away, viz., the George Provincial Hospital. Tertiary referral is to Cape Town 600km away. The need for palliative care services has increased with the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
