The potential of solar process heat for South Africa industry
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis study explores the potential of concentrated solar thermal technologies for high temperature industrial processes in South Africa which makes a significant contribution to global Greenhouse Gas emissions and it whose electricity supply is under pressure. It is thus required to explore reliable technologies that can provide low-carbon renewable energy at competitive costs. Few studies have investigated the economic and other benefits of using solar-generated heat for large-scale industrial process heat applications to replace or support conventional heating methods. Parabolic trough collectors are the most mature technology for both power and process heat, or steam generation. Linear Fresnel collectors could become an attractive alternative in terms of cost in the not too distant future.
