In order to address these needs at the University of Cape Town, many disciplines now require a first-year course which aims to equip learners with the language and communication skills, which are necessary in order to successfully complete a university degree. Students in the Economics department enroll in a discipline-specific, writing-intensive course which runs throughout the first year of the learners' university experience.
