Le Huray's account of musical change during the Reformation, in Music and the Reformation in England 1549-1660 (Cambridge, 1978), served as a model on which to view contemporary developments. Pass' definitions of the role of music in church (kerygmatic, koinoniac and leitourgic), contained in Music and the Church (Nashville, 1989), have also been used as a basis for the study.
