The roles of differentiation and integration, metacognition and emotion regulation in increasing cognitive complexity

Increasing cognitive complexity is an important outcome in the field of preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE). This research maps factors that play a role in interventions that have raised complexity, presenting them in a moderated serial multiple mediation model. The factors include a newly-termed variable of differentiation and integration, metacognition, levels of negative affect, and emotion regulation. The model is then investigated empirically in a three-group online experiment run with participants from the Prolific participant database (N = 210). Complementing this, the model is interrogated in a real-world environment, when designing and delivering a training for mentors working with at-risk individuals. The revised model is offered to the field of cognitive complexity, while also holding insights for the fields of metacognition, affective science, emotion regulation, and P/CVE.
