Experimental Validation of an Ejector Ramjet Solver at High Entrainment Conditions

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Experimental validation of a quasi-one-dimensional control volume ejector-ramjet solver was performed at various subsonic inlet flow conditions corresponding to high-entrainment ratios. An ejector apparatus was designed to replicate the intake of an ejector-ramjet currently under development. The apparatus was then connected to a vacuum tank with which the desired inlet conditions were achieved by drawing down the tank, and restricting flow with various-sized orifice plates. The experiments conducted consisted of varying the cross-sectional flow area of the mixing tube, and testing with multiple primary jet mass flow rates to attain a wide range of data to validate the 1D-ERAM solver against. Two groups of simulations were performed with the 1D-ERAM, one where the calculations used a fully developed turbulent flow friction factor, and the other where the friction factor calculations accounted for flow development from the entrance of the mixing tube. From the experimental data ejector performance parameters of entrainment and compression ratios were calculated, and then compared against the predictions made by the 1D-ERAM solver.
