The Volumetric Properties for Selected Impurities in Dense CO2 Destined for Re-Injection
Abstract
dc:description.abstractAcid gas re-injection and carbon capture and storage are two technologies now implemented for reducing the industrial emission of CO2 and management of produced CO2. In both cases, impurities such as H2O, H2S, COS, O2, and SO2 can find a way into a CO2 injectate stream. These impurities can impact the thermophysical properties and chemical equilibria within the fluid stream. In this work, the volumetric influence of H2S, COS, CS2, SO2, and O2 impurities in a dense CO2 phase were studied through high-precision density measurements. The densities were used in calculating the apparent molar volumes. These molar volumes were subsequently used in calibrating the mixing coefficients for reference Helmholtz Energy Equations of State and Fluctuation Solution Theory models. The optimized mixing parameters were validated by comparison to existing density measurements and/or bubble / dew point data. Finally, the mixing coefficients were utilized in a Gibbs Energy Minimization routine to optimize the enthalpy of formation for COS and to calculate the equilibrium quotients. These routines will be expanded in the future to explore high-pressure processes.
