Facial emotion recognition (FER) is one such process, potentially accounting for BPD’s interpersonal dysfunction. Nonetheless, the BPD-FER literature has inconsistencies likely caused by FER task psychometric properties and BPD’s diagnostic ambiguity. The present dissertation addressed concerns related to trait models and the BPD-FER literature, through (a) integrating BPD criteria into a hierarchical trait model, (b) developing an FER task, and (c) studying a hierarchical trait model’s relation to FER. In the first study (Chapter 2), psychiatric outpatient data (N = 216) were used to show that BPD criteria primarily reflect a general PD dysfunction factor (g-PD), which is related to established personality functioning variables. The second study (Chapter 3) developed and validated the Graded Emotional Face Task (GEFT), with one undergraduate sample (N = 224) used for stimulus selection and a second undergraduate sample (N = 219) for validation. Although many GEFT scales were reliable and valid, a number of commonly used scales in the BPD literature performed poorly. The third study (Chapter 4) demonstrated that a hierarchical trait model could account for BPD-FER relations, as well as expand upon them, in undergraduates oversampled for BPD (N = 407).
