Primarily, it is concerned with marginalized representations of embodiment and their transformative potentiality: firstly, in their ability to incite and illuminate political action, and secondly, in their ability to appeal to both popular and academic readers. Using cultural studies and theories of pain, abjection, and the grotesque, I argue for each writer’s queering of bodily expectations; it is a cultural critique as much as it as an exercise in reparative reading.
