We have provided a literature review in warehouse design in Chapter 2 in which different areas of warehousing are identified and explained. Warehouses traditionally have been considered as a connection between manufacturers and retailers in supply chain. Therefore most of the research and studies in the past have looked at warehouses from this point of view. In recent years however, new form of warehouses have appeared which directly connects itself to the end consumer in a supply chain. These new warehouses are, functioning as both, a place to store goods as well as a place to provide services to customers. That is why the functionality and the problems of these new type of warehouses are different. Not only do the cost of on hand inventory and out of stock items matter, but the pace of material handling and speed of responses in the warehouses also make a big difference. There has not been that much research that studies warehouses from this new perspective. Due to importance of order-picking in a warehouse which has impacts on both pace and cost we decided to pursue this topic. In Chapter 3 a predictive model for traveling salesman problem is developed which is used in the following chapter in a warehousing context. Chapter 4 presented a developed algorithm for dynamic order picking problem in a warehouse.
