I analyze audio and video files, field notes, classroom artifacts, and interviews to develop a complex understanding of the various forces with which the teacher must contend, principally the meeting of standardized requirements on the one hand and the integration of DV composing as an innovative curricular technique on the other. Specifically, DV composing is examined as a dialogic tool for authoring that expands the opportunities for students to interact as editors, composers, designers, and performers. It is in such spaces of interaction that deeper learning occurs. Although there have been studies focused on the value of DV composing for student success, more research is needed to understand the decisions that shape teacher practices when engaging this tool. As a single case study, this dissertation contributes to that imperative by providing a fine-grained analysis of the choices one teacher makes as she strives to maintain a high standard for student achievement and simultaneously incorporate a new pedagogical process.
