Aim: The goals of this study were to evaluate the relationship between jaw functional limitation, the number and frequency of oral behaviors in individuals with and without myalgia. In addition, to evaluate the role of gender in these three constructs. A total of 140 subjects were classified into two groups: controls (n=79) and myalgia (n=61) based on the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC-TMD). Jaw limitation was assessed by computing the global score of the Jaw Functional Limitation Scale (JFLS). Oral behaviors were assessed by computing the number and frequency of behaviors using the Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC). The association between jaw functional limitation and myalgia was analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test due to the lack of normal distribution and equality of variances. The effect of gender on the relation between jaw limitation and myalgia was evaluated using odds ratio. The association between number and frequency of oral behaviors and myalgia was analyzed using t-test and the effect of gender by a two-way ANOVA. Finally, Spearman’s correlation coefficients were used to investigate the association between jaw functional limitation and oral behaviors as continuous variables. Results: A statistically significant higher jaw limitation, oral behaviors numbers and frequency were observed in the myalgia group compared to controls. Gender did not modify the relationship between jaw functional limitation, oral behaviors and myalgia. There is a statistically significant low to moderate positive association was found between jaw limitation and the number and frequency of oral behaviors. Conclusion: Jaw limitation and oral behaviors are higher among individuals with myalgia.
