In three acts, it depicts a short moment in time, beginning with a composer in graduate school sitting at home. He is listening to a vinyl pressing of his dissertation entitled “Penumbra” that is still in-progress, and he is unpleased. After a short phone call, he sits down at a keyboard to continue working on the piece. The mundane soon turns to the mystical as this instance of self-doubt leads to revelation. Important to the work is its unique three-act structure: Act I and Act II overlap exactly to create Act III. A defining feature of Act III is its incorporation of “phase cancellation,” which is the silence that results when two identical audio samples with opposite polarities overlap. In the final act, the select sounds that are erased by phase cancellation reveal the presence of previously unnoticed sounds from Acts I & II. Fulfilling Penumbra, in all its layers, is an ode to the creative process and the triumph of the creative spirit. It is a toast to new beginnings: the end of one phase, and the start of another. The piece was created in Buffalo, NY in 2019 — composed, recorded, and edited in its entirety in two small rooms in the composer’s home.","**To request an accessible version of the file(s) associated with this item, contact library@buffalo.edu.
