PI-88 is currently being studied for its potential role in the remyelination process. The purpose of said analysis was to investigate the potential roles of lipids, neurotransmitters, and the drug PI-88 in remyelination of demyelinated axons. Demyelination can occur after either physical traumatic injury to the central nervous system or inflammation caused by neurodegenerative disease such as multiple sclerosis. In the experiments described in this thesis, individual mass spectra were taken at 100-micrometer spatial resolution across mouse spinal cord sections, which allowed to study the localization of molecules at the site of injury and other non-injured regions of the spinal cord. The chemical composition of the injured area was compared to the uninjured area to gain knowledge about the function of lipids and neurotransmitters in healing and remyelination. The results obtained from these studies could be used as insight for further development of treatment options for traumatic injury and hypomyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis."]},{"key":"dc:format","label":"Dc Format","values":["application/pdf"]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging Analysis of Lipids and Neurotransmitters in PI-88 Treated Traumatically Injured Murine Spinal Cords"]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:contributor":["Wood, Troy","Chemistry"],"dc:creator":["Izydorczak, Luke"],"dc:date":["2019-07-30T15:11:37Z","2019","2019-05-16 13:19:03"],"dc:description":["M.S.","Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) was used and described herein, to analyze traumatically injured mouse spinal cords, some of which were treated with the drug PI-88.
