The participants in this study were eight highly qualified students from the top educational institutions in China who now study as doctoral candidates in different academic fields at a large university in northwestern New York. Several in-depth and open-ended interviews were conducted to describe, from the participants’ perspective,their attitudes toward American higher education as well as their identity crises in a new learning and living environment. Results showed that all of these participants encountered unique acculturation and academic problems due to different cultural norms and academic expectations between China and America, the Chinese graduate students in this study adopted different strategies so as to overcome the difficulties and adapt to American culture and education.
