As the result, there have been plural conceptualizations of toleration which are expected to be universally applicable to the situation where the practice of toleration is demanded. However, as implied by the attempt to deduce a universal concept of toleration, the presence of plural understandings of the concept of toleration seems to show that the this task of conceptualizing toleration, which can be applied universally to the circumstances requiring practices of toleration, is yet an unaccomplished task. Thus, the competition between various conceptualizations of toleration is assumed as the spontaneous outcome of the presence of the plural concepts of toleration as the source of controversy and so does the struggle of the legitimate methodology for reaching a genuine universal concept of toleration. The thesis this dissertation hopes to present delineates that these attempts and struggles for the universal concept of toleration is an unreachable goal. There are several motives performing their roles to actualize the various practices of toleration, and it is impossible to unify those motives into a single motive.
