Traditionally, suspensions have been utilized to address discipline issues in schools. However, previous research has found that out of school suspension may not be an effective deterrent to student misbehavior. Further, previous research has found that out of school suspension may have a negative impact on the overall academic performance of the school and is applied disproportionately to minority students. Despite these findings, administrators continue to suspend students. Previous studies have suggested that the school administrator has choices when assigning disciplinary consequences, implying that there may be alternative options to out of school suspension. It is suggested that the administrator's personal beliefs towards out of school suspension may influence the disciplinary decisions within their schools. This study considered the relationship between a school's out of school suspension rate and the administrator's personal beliefs regarding traditional out of school suspension and the sources of student misbehavior. This study also considered the relationship between a school's out of school suspension rate, the administrator's personal beliefs towards traditional out of school suspension and the sources of student misbehavior and academic performance.
