It explores the relationship between features, amenities, and characteristics at six levels: room, module, building, complex, cultural landscape, and social realm with indicators of interest to the military (career satisfaction, career intention, overall satisfaction, fitness, and resilience. This study was developed and undertaken in collaboration with Fort Hood’s Directorate of Public Works from 2014 through 2017. This study found that the tension between military and civilian cultures pull at one another in unexpected ways in the barracks. The resulting housing typology struggles to house the professional Soldier at home (when away from conflict).
