We aimed to understand if self-reported HRQoL among breast cancer survivors is associated with circulating cytokines. We examined the cross-sectional associations between cytokines and HRQoL at the time of diagnosis before treatment and one year later post-treatment. We examined if cytokine levels at the time of diagnosis were associated with HRQoL at one year, and also if change in cytokines from at diagnosis to one year post-diagnosis were associated with the HRQoL at one year. Methods: Women in the After Breast Cancer study completed an epidemiological questionnaire which included a HRQoL assessment (Short Form-36) at breast cancer diagnosis before treatment (n=434) and after one year (n=326). Blood samples collected at diagnosis and at one year post- diagnosis were analyzed for twenty five circulating cytokines using Luminex bead-based assay. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for poor HRQoL (≤median) among tertiles of cytokine concentrations were estimated with multivariable logistic regression. Least Square means and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for continuous measures of HRQoL were also estimated with linear regression by tertiles of cytokines. Trend analysis was performed to check if there is a positive trend of the HRQoL scores from the lowest tertile to the highest in both the logistic and linear regression models.
