The adipokine Leptin has been identified as a potential link between nutritional status and neuroendocrine and immune function. Leptin up-regulates a pro-inflammatory immune response. Fatigue is the most common and debilitating symptom of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It is important to explore potential treatments as MS-related fatigue negatively affects the quality of life of persons with MS.1 While the exact cause of MS –related fatigue is unknown, there are numerous hypotheses indicating that diet may be associated with MS-related fatigue, and improved patient outcomes. To date there are no intervention studies comparing the effects of a high fat, low carbohydrate diet versus high carbohydrate, low fat diet on serum Leptin levels and secondly on MS related fatigue. The specific aim of this randomized, controlled, crossover study is to first investigate differences in serum Leptin in Multiple Sclerosis versus healthy control subjects.
