The inquiry concerns itself with four aspects: (1) psychiatric studies in schizophrenia, (2) Boisen's life and schizophrenic episode, (3) a critical examination of his theory of schizophrenia, and (4) religious implications and applications of his views. Schizophrenia constitutes a serious problem for society. Its cost, either in terms of dollars or human lives, is staggering. Psychiatrically, it is a baffling problem, and has been tackled from almost every conceivable angle of pathology and etiology. There is, however, generally in creasing optimism at the prognosis of schizophrenia and a much better knowledge of its nature and causation, its symptomatology and dynamics.
