Hoi perì tò hierón: A Study of Sacerdotal Housing at Ancient Greek Sanctuaries

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This dissertation investigates the occasional phenomenon of cultic personnel residing at or near ancient Greek sanctuaries. It begins with a review of the textual evidence for the activities of cultic personnel at sanctuaries that may have necessitated their residence on site. At the core of the study are nine case studies that focus on the issue of sacerdotal housing at archaeological sites. The selected sites include the sanctuary of Demeter and Kore at Eleusis, the Amphiaraion at Oropos, the sanctuary of Asklepios and Apollo Maleatas at Epidauros, the oracle of Zeus, the Athenian acropolis, the sanctuaries at Delphi, the Altis at Olympia, the sanctuary of Aphaia at Aigina, and the sanctuary of Apollo on Cape Zoster. For each of the sites, I review the textual evidence and archaeological evidence for possible sacerdotal housing.
