The Effect of Mental Techniques on Sport Performance in Athletes

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this synthesis paper was to examine the effects of mental training techniques on athletic performance and psychological functioning in athletes across multiple sport settings and competitive levels. Specifically, the review analyzed how interventions such as mindfulness, self-talk, visualization, breathing techniques, and yoga nidra influence anxiety regulation, self-confidence, motivation, recovery, emotional control, and overall performance outcomes. Ten peer-reviewed, data-based studies were reviewed and synthesized. The findings consistently demonstrated that mental skills training positively impacts both psychological and physiological factors related to athletic performance. Additionally, the literature suggested that long-term and structured mental training interventions produce more sustainable improvements than short-term approaches. Overall, the review supports the integration of sport psychology and mental skills training into athletic programs to promote consistent performance enhancement and holistic athlete development.
