Co teaching in ENL Classrooms

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Co teaching plays a crucial role in the academic success for students with and without disabilities. Research shows that these co teaching programs have been successful for English Language Learners' (ELLs) academic growth as well. However, at this time, there is a noticeable absence of co teaching in English as a New Language (ENL) programs. The overarching research question of this capstone is: How can schools implement an Integrated Co Teaching (ICT) model classroom for ELLs to meet their linguistic and learning needs. The literature underscores the need for more support for ELLs when considering graduation rates, pull out programs success and ELLs' overall academic achievement. To mitigate this problem, teachers and administrators will participate in the professional development (PD) series shaped by research on co teaching, support for ELLs and effective training on how to bring co teaching into the classroom to best serve students. Participants will learn about and implement the six co teaching models that are most appropriate for their classroom and students. This PD will provide research and relevant use of school based data and tools to foster academic growth for ELLs. As a result, all educators benefit from research based training on co teaching and ELLs will also benefit socially and academically.
