A questionnaire survey was administered to a random sample of athletic administrators (N=189) to determine the current status of eligibility standards in New York State. The results revealed that a large number of school districts (76%) have initiated athletic policies more stringent than those of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. However, a number of schools only satisfy the Association's minimal standards. Actual policies vary greatly among the school districts surveyed. The advantages and disadvantages of eligibility policies are discussed.
