Exploring horticultural and ecological chemistry through mass spectrometry-based metabolite profiling

Advances in mass spectrometry have provided researchers with powerful hypothesis-generating and exploratory tools for studying plant chemistry. However, identification of data is a major bottleneck due to the difficulty obtaining standards, overreliance on cheminformatics tools, and lack of interdisciplinary expertise. This work focuses on overcoming these challenges by pairing mass spectrometry-based metabolite profiling (MS-BMP) with heuristic techniques and likelihood assessments for exploring plant chemistry through interdisciplinary, collaborative approaches, and using complementary techniques to test hypotheses generated by exploratory metabolomics; the work focuses on projects that couldn’t progress without identification of compounds, for which standards were not readily available.
