O crescimento urbano de Rio Claro e suas implicações nos riscos à inundação: cenários de 1970 a 2015

The aim of this study was to map the urban growth of the city of Rio Claro and flood areas through geotechnology and analyze the changes in risk areas in the period from 1970 to 2015. It is known that the intense urbanization that took place in the cities in recent decades resulted in sealed soil, removal of native vegetation, buildings in floodplains and failure to observe the Permanent Protection areas (PPAs) of rivers and springs, among other factors, that contribute to the occurrence of flood events . It may be noted that in most cities occurred urban planning failures, which has prevented the government to control adequately the dangerous weather consequences, such as storms and downpours. The lower social class families, for lack of choice, usually live in high risk areas and are supposed to be the most affected. Rio Claro as an average city also faces these problems. In this sense, it was proposed this study, which is based on aerial photographs and multitemporal orthophotos, topographic maps and in records of the city flood events provided by the Civil Defense, as well old news archive. With the support of geotechnology as remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), it was possible to carry out this study the mapping of areas susceptible to flooding as well as the growth of urban sprawl. The results found are the decrease in rainfall during the study period, the growth of the urban area by 222% in the period of 45 years from 18km² to 40km², as well the emergence of new flood spots in the city. It is expected that the results achieved here can contribute to the municipal public administration in tracing guidelines for prevention and mitigation of future events in the city
