Thirty smokers and 30 non-smokers seen at the clinics of FOSJC-UNESP were screened. Smears were obtained from the left lateral border of the tongue with a cytobrush and slides were processed for immunohistochemistry using the antibodies reported Conventional microscopy was used for qualitative analysis. The results were analyzed statistically by the Z test, Fisher's exact test and comparison of two proportions (plus-4 confidence interval method). Foram triados trinta e dois pacientes fumantes e vinte não fumantes, que freqüenta as clínicas da FOSJC-UNESP. Esfregaços da borda lateral esquerda da língua dos pacientes foram realizados utilizando-se o cytobrush e as lâminas obtidas foram processadas pela técnica de imunoistoquímica para os referidos anticorpos. Uma análise qualitativa e quantitativa foi realizada através da microscopia comum e a análise estatística utilizou o Teste Z, teste Exato de Fisher e método de comparação de duas proporções intervalo mais quatro. Foi verificada superioridade de expressão da CK6 (p=0,002), CKI6 (p=0,003), CKI9 (p=0,0001) e PAN (p=0,008), nos esfregaços avaliados da mucosa bucal de pacientes fumantes comparado aos não fumantes.
