The erythrocytes have been used as a model for evaluating the protective and toxic effects of a large vari ety of substances allowing to obtain information on the effects of the cell membrane. Thus the aim of the study was to evaluate the toxicity profile of some coumarins ( 1,2 - benzopirona and 4 - coumarinol ) was conducted to determine the cytotoxic potential aga inst human erythrocytes of groups A, B and O, as the cytotoxic potential against bacteria of clinical importance, which was evaluated by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) by microdilution technique. Coumarins A. cearensis were able to induce hemolysis of human red cells belonging to the three ABO blood types, however at very low percentages, not compromising its fundamental role of gas transport in the body. 1,2 - benzopirona and 4 - coumarinol , coumarins A. cearensis showed antimicrobial e ffect forward Gram positive and Gram negative strains with a minimum inhibitory concentration ranging between 6,7 μg and 200 μg. This result is relevant since Gram positive bacteria are generally more sensitive to antibiotics than gram - negative bacteria.
