Estudo coproparasitológico e epidemiológico do complexo teníase-cisticercose em habitantes do município de Marizópolis - Paraíba

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The complex taeniasis - cysticercosis has worldwide distribution, and is a neglected tropical disease that constitutes a serious public health problem. Has high prevalence especially in regions where health and socioeconomic conditions are p oor, which contributes to the maintenance and transmission of the parasite cycle. Knowing that the detection of taeniasis of carriers is essential for the control of cysticercosis, both in humans and in pigs, this study aimed to conduct a parasitological a nd epidemiological study of complex taeniasis - cysticercosis in inhabitants of the municipality of Marizópolis - Paraíba, with order to determine the prevalence of taeniasis and the potential spread of cysticercosis, as well as to meet the epidemiological pro file of the residents of this city. The study universe consisted of 125 people, which represented the stockmen and their families, who attended to our invitation. During the first stage of this research an epidemiological form was filled out in order to kn ow the history of the participants, their eating habits and hygiene conditions in which they live. The second step was to collect stool samples of participants and their transport to the Federal University of Paraíba, which were analyzed in the Clinical Pa rasitology Laboratory through fecal examinations using the techniques of Hoffmann and Kato - Katz. Through the analy sis it was found that 53.6% of the investigated individuals harbored at least one species of enteroparasito and that the disease occurred in f emales, representing 59.7% of the cases. Many individuals had more than one parasite, and the most common were: Endolimax nana 42.4% , Entamoeba coli 22.4% , and the most affected age group was between 16 - 31 years old. One of the samples (0.8%) was positive for Taenia spp eggs, becoming a worrying fact since it is close to the maximum limits set by the Pan American Health Organization to be considered endemic. In addition, information obtained also showed that most people live in good health and hygiene condi tions, have the habit of consuming raw vegetables, and the meat is preferably swine. Therefore, it can be inferred that the municipality of Marizópolis - PB still can not be considered an endemic area for taeniasis, but there is still risk factors for the mai ntenance of cysticercosis related to the consumption of raw vegetables.
