Natural vegetable oils have many advantages for therapeutic use , such as low toxicity , biodegradability , and are renewable for availability in relation to petroleum that are finite , among these oils have limonene which features various activ ities among them gastroprotective function front of gastric ulcers induced by anti - inflammatory drugs nonsteroidal anti - inflamtórias and activities as well as antimicrobial, antifungal , antitumor and anti - parasitic . The development of therapeutic lipid sys tems becomes necessary in order to obtain a more technically elaborate pharmaceutical form and greater safety for the use of pure limonene . This raises the emulsions are thermodynamically unstable systems comprised of microscopic droplets dispersed in anot her liquid having polarities different from each other, stabilized by one or more surfactant . The study conditions for the optimal balance of the proportion of surfactant used in the system to stabilize internal phase in an emulsified system corresponds to the hydrophilic - lipophilic balance ( HLB). The emulsions were prepared by the method of temperature with phase inversion, which were obtained from two batches of emulsion 14 , a lot stored at room temperature and another at 5 ° C were then characterized for long and short term stability. The limonene - containing formulation 7 was considered the most stable with HLB value of 10.7 .
