Childhood is a stage of life where nutritional prob lems, such as malnutrition and overweight and contribute to worsening health as a whole, often has significant negative impact on the process of growth and development. Th e consequences of childhood obesity may be noticed in the short and long term, with the first group orthopedic disorders, respiratory disorders, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Hence, the present study aimed to assess the socio- demographic profile, biochemical and food intake in normal weight children and overw eight enrolled in public schools in the city of João Pessoa - PB. Both were assessed fo r 267 children 7-10 years old, classifying them as normal weight and overweight ac cording to nutritional status. In assessing the nutritional status of the body mass i ndex (BMI) was used for age and sex, sociodemographic characteristics were reported by c aretakers of children by completing the form, the food intake assessment was performed using the 24-hour recall and laboratory tests were performed at the Hospital Lau ro Wanderley children with fasting. Data were entered in Microsoft excel analyzed by SP SS 21 software with a significance level of 5% for the comparison between groups, Stud ent's t test was used with unequal variances or Mann-Whitney test in the case of numer ical variables and the chi-square test in the case of categorical. Results variables: we can see that income was the only sociodemographic variable that influences the nutri tional status, caloric intake was above the EER in both groups, being higher in the o verweight. With respect to vitamins, more than 50% of the population had inadequate inta ke. For sodium, 90.3% of students were overweight with consumption higher than UL. Th e lipid profile and blood glucose showed higher values in the group with excess weigh t, including total cholesterol and triglycerides showed higher values significantly in overweight than in normal-weight group. Food intake per serving on the food pyramid noted t hat regardless of nutritional status consumption vegetables, fruits and dairy pro ducts was below the recommendations and that the exception of legumes, for all other food groups were no significant differences with higher values in the g roup overweight . Conclusion: A large number of participants show deficits of essential n utrients and excessive consumption of foods rich in fat, sugar and salt, the latter being more significant in the group of overweight.
