Similaridade genotípica de Salmonella enterica isolada de animais silvestres e exóticos em cativeiro em Ohio, EUA

The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence, antimicrobial resistance patterns and fenotipic and genotipic relationship of Salmonella enterica species from wild and exotic animals in captivity and their environment, in Ohio, USA. A total of 319 samples, including feces (n=225), environment (n=56) and food (n=38) were collected from 31 species (common crane, cheetah, raccoon, giraffe, takin, white tailed deer, goral, white and indian rhino, llama, blue sheep, onager, wild dog, oryx, eland, tahr, zebra, rabbit, wolf, domestic sheep, goat, reindeer, ram, banteng, sable antílope, hog, goose, bison, small ruminant, Przewalski's horse and pony). After culture, the isolates were subjected to antimicrobial Susceptibility testing by disk diffusion method, serotyping and genotyping by macrorestriction of chromosomal DNA. Salmonella was detected in 56/225 (25%) of fecal samples, 6/56 (11%) of environmental samples and 6/38 (16%) of food samples. This pathogen was more frequently found in fecal samples from giraffes (78%), cranes (75%) and raccoons (75%) and the most frequently serovars detected were Typhimurium (64%), Newport (32%), Montevideo (5%) and Heidelberg (5%). While most isolates were pan-susceptible (88%), pentarresistentes strains, AmStTeKmGm (9%) were found. Genotypic diversity was observed among isolates of S. Typhimurium. The identification of clonally related isolates coming from the environment and feces suggests a transmission between hosts through contaminated environment. The diversity of Salmonella serovars present in several wild species in captivity and their barns has implications for public health, mainly for people in contact with these animals.
