It has as main objectives to measure and analyze the intense daily rainfalls and their impacts on urban area in the city of João Pessoa, from 1981-2012. The methodological procedures to reach the proposed objectives were: bibliographical research on the subject, followed by the collection and analysis of data for intense daily rainfalls, equal or higher than 60mm , which were provided by the João Pessoa Weather Station. In the process of data analysis we listed out those more representative for every decade, equal or above 100mm, grouping them in the category of extreme events. With regard to desk research to identify the pluvial impacts, we used the collection of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Paraiba (IHGP). Subsequently was used the synopitc charts of atmospheric pressure at the surface from Brazilian Navy and Meteorological Satellite Images (5 METEOSAT, GOES 8 and GOES 12) in order to identify weather systems that create extreme rainfall events, which generate signicant impacts. It was found a significant number of intense rainfall events and pluvial impacts such as flooding, landslides, traffic accident, lack of water and electricity, falling trees, traffic jams and even some wounded and dead people due do those events. Therefore, this study is important to subsidize planners and decision makers, concerning the understanding of extreme rainfall events and thus contribute to a better organization of the urban environment of João Pessoa.","abstract_html":"This study considers as a theoretical background the proposal of Monteiro (1976) on the climate of cities from the perspective of Urban Climate System (U.C.S.), hydro- meteoric subsystem.
