They present the mangrove vegetation, which is characterized by being resistant to floods, salt water and the ocean tides. In the Paraíba river estuary, there is an approximately 5.000 ha length of mangrove area, which receive direct influence from human activity. This work’s main goal is to analyse the metamorphosis process of the mangrove landscape in the Paraiba River estuary, taking into account its distributions and the identified human occupations in the surroundings, aiming to verify the transformation of first nature into second nature. In order to do so, a literary review on the topic was done, as well as the use of GIS data and field work. The usage of the GIS images resulted on the production of thematic maps containing the mangrove’s length, the human occupations (subnormal habitations, farming ponds and deposits of petcoke) which were present on the analysed landscape. The mangrove landscape’s metamorphosis process in the Paraiba River estuary happened according to the expansion rhythm of the surrounding districts, which share territory with the mangrove itself. The given mangrove’s landscape was analysed under the perspective of critical geography, considering its degradation as a result of the intense processes of globalisation and urbanisation, which transforms it into second nature. The results of this work show the need of public policies scoping the mangrove’s conservation and the improvement on the life of the communities which share its space.","abstract_html":"Mangroves are ecosystems that surround areas of river estuaries and are present only in tropical or subtropical zones.
